Seek shade

Shade from trees and man made structures (pergolas, buildings) provide skin protection, but do not totally block out UV radiation. UV radiation can still be reflected off the ground and buildings around you even under dense shade.

Always use shade as well as clothes, hats and sunscreen for maximum protection from UV radiation.

I’m planning shade – what should I consider?

Shade structures

Using shadecloth – try to find shadecloth with at least 94 per cent
      protection.

Other materials – look for a sun protection factor of 50.
Moveable structures (tents, umbrellas etc.) are also useful.

Trees

The best trees for shade have a broad dense canopy. Choose carefully to make sure the type of tree is right for your climate and soil type, as well as how it will be used
.

Think about :
Sun in winter – would a deciduous tree be best?
Will it drop branches, fruit, seed pods or attract bees?
How long will it take to grow?
Will it cast shade where you want it? Plant trees to the north and west
      of where you want shade
.
Plant at least 3 metres from buildings, pipes and drains, and away from
      power lines
.
